22 Year Old Twenty Something Single Malt Scotch Whisky
The latest release in Ardbeg’s intriguing Twenty Something series is an incredible 22 Year Old that opens a window into what the distillery was like during its tumultuous past. Created at a time when the company was struggling and a few diehard whisky aficionados dared to dream about making something better. Rumoured to be the last in the series, it’s a fitting swansong and a tribute to the passion that has made this Islay distillery what it is today.
Distilled in 1996 and filled into ex-Bourbon barrels, it was bottled at 46.4% in July 2018. Sipping the resulting dram, you’ll uncover things balsa wood planes, Frazzles, tropical fruit chews, Hubba Bubba and yoghurt-covered raisins that take you back to your childhood. Then you’ll be whisked away to Scotland with heather honey and Arbroath smokies, over to Hungary with a combination of sour cream and smoked paprika, back to France for a crème brûlée, and then back for breakfast of granola with full-fat milk. And that’s not to mention rosemary and pine branches tossed on to a barbeque, potpourri and fresh mint tea. It’s phenomenally complicated, but then it wouldn’t be Ardbeg if it wasn’t, and on top of all that it’s remarkably enlivening, making you feel… well… Twenty Something.
