Argiano has been excelling in the Brunello district for some five centuries. With a little help from the superstar oenologist Giacomo Tachis, the world famous Cinzano vermouth family and more recently investment from a group of Brazilian businessmen, Argiano continues to drive up the quality level from its prime position on the Montalcino hill. First launched in 2000, Suolo is created using some of the estate’s oldest Sangiovese vineyards and this thirteenth vintage is packed with dark balsamic notes, toasted walnuts, coffee, earthy hedgerow berries and a heady blend of exotic spices, dried flowers, mint tea, liquorice and smoke that brings to mind a visit to a Syrian souq. 2013 produced particularly elegant wines in this part of Tuscany; wines that are drinking handsomely now but have real longevity. But don’t miss out because only 3,000 bottles of this natural wine are made each year.
It’s very much Italian, but Argiano’s Suolo has something to offer fans of Ribera del Duero, California and South Africa, and we recommend serving it alongside a fired slab of red meat, mature hard cheeses or root vegetables roasted with plenty of rosemary and black pepper.
