According to Whisky Advocate: “This is the ultimate PortWood expression from Balvenie and has been finished in 30-year-old Port pipes.”

Balvenie means ‘village of luck’ and the distillery certainly had good fortune when it employed a teenage apprentice in 1962. That young man is now Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE one of the most experienced men in the world of whisky and the creator of this highly regarded dram. He regularly samples the distillery’s Port casks monitoring when each hits its optimal maturation displaying Port influence and a pink hue but retaining the classic Balvenie characteristics. This is considered by many to be one of David C. Stewart’s finest creations.

Dried red fruit juicy raisin blackberry stewed plum red grape and chocolate cherry liqueur notes from the Port pipe-finishing combine expertly with Balvenie’s syrupy smooth heather honey toasted nuts spiced cream orange peel vanilla and gentle smoke from the initial period in Bourbon casks. A Speyside classic touched by the warmth of the Douro Valley. Not to be missed.
