Anna Perenna was the Roman goddess of new beginnings. While Harvey Nichols cannot promise that a sip of Ben Glaetzer’s Anaperenna 2019 will bring the rejuvenation renewal and rebirth that its divine namesake was thought to have done a revelation is assured for those who haven’t tasted this transcendent Aussie icon before.
The Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 so know a thing or two about the area. They’ve carved their niche in the sub-region of Ebenezer where – in their five star-rated winery (James Halliday’s Wine Companion) – they make what Matthew Jukes has called: “Silky textural and layered… extremely serious wines.”
Anaperenna 2019 is a classic Australian blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from an “outstanding” vintage (Wine Advocate). Simply a classic it has huge depth and complexity – as you would expect from vines of 30-130 years of age. The Shiraz provides the weight of this big wine while the Cabernet Sauvignon bring restraint and structure. Notes of blackberry blueberry crème de cassis barbequed meat sandalwood creamy chocolate truffles mocha and spices from every corner of the globe make way for earthy dark flavours dried herbs and something reminiscent of black fruit pastilles. This will continue to improve and you could keep it until nearer 2040 but it’s almost impossible to resist now.
