97+ points “From a benchmark vintage the Biondi-Santi 2016 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a gorgeous appearance with medium concentration highlighted by shiny hues of garnet and dark ruby. The first thing you notice is the compact dark fruit and rather robust textural fibre and power presented here. You almost bite into this wine and you taste some fine grain linked to the young tannins. That with the fresh acidity that is the hallmark signature of this estate guarantees long cellar aging and I would put my money on this vintage for long-long-term longevity. The fruit is compact and supple with dried cherry blue flower iron ore and candied orange peel. There is tobacco balsam herb and gardening soil in a supporting role and the wine is beautifully fleshed out but also rich in this balanced growing season. It surely needs more time to come together with pinpoint precision but the wine's elegance is a certainty. 2025-2050.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

97 points “Unmistakable in its class and potential.” – Decanter

A truly historic name of Montalcino the Biondi-Santi family is one of the most revered winemaking dynasties in Italy. The Greppo vineyards have been in the family since the 1800s. Currently supervising around 26 hectares of vines the estate is renowned for its classic ethereal and long-lived traditional style of Brunello. In fact many people regard Biondi-Santi as being the inventors of Brunello di Montalcino as we know it today.

2016 was one of the most highly rated vintages ever for the region eclipsing even the monumental 2015s. It was also the year that the fabled estate sold the majority of its shares to EPI Christopher Descours’ fashion-led luxury group that also owns Charles Heidsieck Piper-Heidsieck JM Weston Alain Figaret and Bonpoint. Jacopo Biondi-Santi and his son Tancredi remain actively involved but now with much more financial investment.

It's a breath-taking Brunello di Montalcino. All that classic leather forest floor rich fruit orange peel and muskiness is electrified by a lightning bolt of freshness that delivers rose iris violet pomegranate redcurrant star anise mint fennel and sage. In terms of food matches consider wild boar roast lamb dishes rich in umami pappardelle with wild mushrooms or sausages and chestnuts and sauces created from sun-dried tomatoes.
