Tasting Notes
Employing a minimal-interventionist approach – with particular emphasis on organic and biodynamic principles – Bodegas Zarate wines are typically more restrained, traditional versions of Albariño, showing the grape in its purest form. Despite being one of the area’s oldest producers, it was not until very recently that this small but impeccably run winery started to capture the attention of press and public.
Albariño Zarate is only produced in small quantities and the grapes come from eleven tiny vineyards (covered in mint, dandelion and a dozen other herbs) with an average vine age of approximately 35 years. Pear, apricot, flint and white blossom grace a hauntingly delicate nose that changes with aeration. With a strong mineral core this is impeccably balanced and pristinely focused in the mouth. The palate reveals discreet flavours of citrus, slate and smoke – almost reminiscent of fine Chablis. One of the purest and most integral expressions available, this is a wonderful choice to pair with salmon, mussels, oysters, starters and delicately spicy cuisines, or as an aperitif.
