96-98 points “Promising palate with power and persistence where an overall harmony enhances the feeling of sophistication.” – Essi Avellan MW

96 points “Subtle gastronomic and bewitching… A triumph!” – Decanter Magazine

95 points “There is an extremely charming uplifting juiciness and fruit that makes the wine a winner… It is also exciting to see that the rosé has a strong element of red citrus with blood orange and red grapefruit as clear components of the harmonic symphony.” – Richard Juhlin

Despite being quite stressful and complicated in the vineyards 2012 has been described by respected wine critic Jancis Robinson as “an exceptional vintage in Champagne” particularly for the Pinot Noir that dominates Bollinger’s La Grande Année Rosé.

Hailing from entirely Grand and Premier Cru sites this is a blend of 67% Pinot Noir (mainly from Aÿ and Verzenay) and 33% Chardonnay (from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oiry) that was fermented entirely in oak aged on the lees for 7.5 years riddled by hand and disgorged manually. Where it differs from the white version of La Grande Année is that it also contains a splash of red wine from the exclusive and legendary plot Côte aux Enfants with its ungrafted and immensely flavoursome vines. This small addition completely changes the wine like the flip of a switch. Wild strawberries red berry sorbet blood orange ruby grapefruit peach skins melting vanilla ice cream creamy white chocolate nougat spice and lip-smacking crispness. And that’s just tasting it now. This will continue to develop and improve for decades and decades to come. Rich savoury and vinous; this is the kind of Champagne you can sip throughout a meal especially if you’re serving game orange-laced oriental dishes pibil cherry tomato pasta or a pea and red pepper salad with a paprika ginger and orange dressing.

Champagne Bollinger was founded in 1829 by Jacques Bollinger and soon earned a reputation for quality. Under subsequent generations its reputation has gone from strength to strength and today it’s one of the most prestigious of all Champagne brands. Stylistically Bollinger is renowned for its rich and savoury style.
