Caroni 10 Year Old VSOC Trinidad Rum
Caroni is the Karuizawa of the rum world. Trinidad was once home to over fifty distilleries, now only Angostura remains. Established in 1918 Caroni was famed for supplying the British Navy with its full-bodied and full-throttle rums made using its own Trinidadian sugar cane. However, it was sadly closed in 2002 and then demolished. The heavy rums that were saved are now top of the bucket list for collectors. A golden tot with an oily and resinous texture, dripping with treacle, orange peel, star anise, stewed prunes, apple crumble and smoky oak spice. We only secured twelve bottles or this rare, exceptional and lost rum, and they’re sure to sell out rapidly.
John Barrett of Bristol Classic Rum lovingly seeks out rare rums of distinction produced by individual estates. Sometimes just single barrels from single stills, these rums spend years maturing in damp dark cellars on the British mainland. Effectively John Barrett follows the model akin to that of an independent whisky bottler. Whisky expert Dave Broom says that: “His firm is, as far as I know, the only one to attempt to do for rum what malt whisky has done for Scotch – premium, small batch, top end, single distillery/single still spirits with individuality and character.” Bottled straight from the cask with only the lightest of filtration, these limited edition rums should be sipped as you would a malt whisky, aged calvados or the finest cognac.
