Koukou Cabernet Franc 2017
Broc Cellars’ wines are quirky and constantly evolving. The first vintage of this natural Cabernet Franc from Happy Canyon in Santa Barbara was called Coucou, a French greeting that felt rather fitting for the new release of a French grape fermented in French oak barrels. The latest vintage has been renamed Koukou, which means ‘baby chicken’ in Japanese – and this wine is certainly as lively as one.
Foot-stomped and aged in French oak for 5 months, Koukou is delightful served ever so slightly chilled. Enjoy all the blackcurrant fruit pastille, lavender, tangy cranberry, wild strawberry and crunchy red pepper flavours with tapas, aubergine in pretty much any format, smørrebrød or fresh tomato sauces.
Most wineries can be found in idyllic locations surrounded by verdant rolling vineyards and peaceful wildlife. But Broc Cellars is not your average producer. This is an urban winery located in the heart of the city of Berkeley that is growing a cult reputation in California. In these metropolitan surroundings, Chris Brockway and his team of young winemakers are crafting incredible wines from all kinds of grapes sourced from vineyards all over the state. Most of the growers they work with farm sustainably, using no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or fertilisers. Their experimental natural wines are made using spontaneous fermentation caused by native yeasts, and little or no sulphur is added. This movement is the wine world’s hot topic and when you taste them you’ll see why the wines are being listed in top restaurants and raved about in the pages of GQ and The New York Times.
