Moscato d'Asti 2020
“A real benchmark producer of this variety and wine.” – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous
Anyone who thinks that sweet wine cannot be fine wine needs to taste the Vignaiolo di Santo Stefano Moscato d’Asti from Ceretto. An elegant, restrained and drier style of Moscato, this is subtly nuanced with crisp green apple, crunchy pear, spices, peach, sherbet, blossom, lemon curd and marzipan, all of which is kept fresh by a delicate spritz. It’s like bottled summer sunshine combined with the refreshment of a cold shower. Magical with desserts like as lemon meringue, pavlova, cheesecake or fruit salad; perfect for picnics or decadent breakfasts at 5.5%; and a surprisingly excellent match to spicy and umami cuisines from places such as Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia. This wine is also vegan friendly and Vignaiolo di Santo Stefano do not employ the biodynamic methods that can sometimes prove controversial due to their requirement for animal products.
Ceretto was established in the 1930s by brothers Bruno and Marcello; this dynamic duo managed to pin down some of the most valuable and historically significant plots in the Barolo in Piedmont. The company is now run by their children Lisa, Roberta, Alessandro and Federico. Despite being a traditional family business, they are incredibly forward thinking. All of the vineyards are either organic or are being converted that way; currently incorporating four wineries, their empire is growing; and they also own a three-Michelin-starred restaurant called Piazza Duomo in Alba. They are famed for their elegant wines and modern Piedmont style and have developed a cult following as one of the region’s under-the-radar stars.
