Grand Vin Pessac-Léognan 2004 - Château Haut-Brion

Château Haut-Brion

Grand Vin Pessac-Léognan 2004

£595.00

It’s hard to think of a winery with a longer or more illustrious history than that of Château Haut-Brion; Haut-Brion is the only one of the five Premier Cru Classés of the 1855 Classification not found in the Médoc. The Delmas family has been making the wines here for almost a century, making it quite unique. Considering how many wines a critic like Antonio Galloni must taste each day, it speaks volumes when he says: “Haut-Brion has long been one of my personal favourites.” If it isn’t one of yours also, it soon will be after tasting this.

After 2004 Bordeaux prices rocketed, leading Jancis Robinson to ask whether this was “the last affordable vintage?” You may want to snap it up in that case. 2004 favoured the Left Bank and in wine critic Neal Martin’s words this “is an excellent wine for the vintage” perfectly demonstrating how the First Growths can transcend the challenges of the year. Hedonistically spiced plums, milk chocolate-coated raisins, hot cross bun spices, black olives, mint, leather, polished mahogany and foraged blackberries all open out of this exquisite wine. Open this an hour or two before you want to drink it and serve with a foie gras Beef Wellington, roasted mushroom dishes, Oaxaca mole, slow-cooked stews or truffles.
