Grand Vin Pauillac 1990 - Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild

Grand Vin Pauillac 1990

Esteemed wine critic Neal Martin describes Château Lafite Rothschild as the “quintessential wine of elegance”, and it’s widely regarded as the most consistent performer of the First Growths, perhaps even the pinnacle of Claret. So the Grand Vin from one of Pauillac’s greatest ever vintages is a highly appealing prospect.

Wound up tight in its youth, this wine is now unfurling from its chrysalis, slowly spreading its wings to reveal cassis, bramble, kirsch-soaked prune, worn leather, woody spices, cigar box, cracked peppercorns and a blend of Assam and Lapsang Souchong tealeaves.

Serve alongside something with slow-cooked depth, such as a Beef Wellington or a rich goulash with galuska. And if you can bring yourself not to drink it all in one night, Robert Parker advises that “by the second day the wine was roaring from the glass.”
