When Robert Parker tasted this in 2014 he said “Kudos to Château Margaux” and awarded it 98 points. James Suckling urged his readers simply: “Find the wine.”

Made by the late great Paul Pontallier in the midst of a heatwave this is astonishing stuff. Its seamless texture opulent decadence and immense depth show that even in the hottest vintages a great winemaker can achieve perfect ripeness. But a youthful and feisty spiciness combined with a faint leathery gamey note come though the signature Margaux elegance suggesting this still has a lot in the tank. In fact at least another decade if not more.

The consistently high-scoring Château Margaux is such a venerated and sought-after wine that it takes the name of the appellation from which it comes; a commanding achievement. Revered for its perfumed elegance floral bouquet and remarkable structure respected wine critic Neal Martin put it best when he described Château Margaux as: “the most feminine and charming of the First Growths.”
