2009 Vintage Rum

Winner of a gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge 2021.

Chairman’s Reserve 2009 Vintage Rum is only the second single vintage bottling of Saint Lucia’s finest to be released.

It’s a blend of rums distilled in 2005 on John Dore and Vendome pot stills and a traditional Coffey column still. Each component was aged for 11 years in ex-Bourbon barrels, before being married together for six months. Bottled at a stronger than usual 46%, this is powerful stuff that reminds us of the old Harvey Nichols favourite, Foursquare. Rich and decadent, it presents lots of wood varnish, antique oak, smoky leather jackets (think rock bars in the 1990s), vanilla pods, dried pineapple, candied mango, passionfruit, banana, tangy lime, buttered toast, olives, coriander seeds, dark chocolate, cracked peppercorns, roasted nuts and tobacco. It’s a worthy and fruitier follow up to the 2005, with more focus on the vibrancy of the spirit and less oak influence. Definitely one to keep in mind to mark a 2009 anniversary with.

Attracted by the island’s expansive sugar plantations, the Barnard family established their distillery on Saint Lucia in the 1930s. For a long time, all was happy on this tropical paradise, surrounded by breath-taking waterfalls, unspoiled rainforest, palm-fringed beaches and the towering Piton Mountains, but sadly the rise of the European sugar beet looked like it would kill off centuries of rum making heritage. The last sugar plantation closed in the 1960s, being replaced with more lucrative bananas. So, the two remaining distilleries on the island – Dennery on the Barnard’s plantation and the other in Roseau owned by the Dutch company Geest – joined forces, creating Saint Lucia Distillers. Creating stunning rums under the Chairman’s Reserve brand, using molasses sourced from Guyana shipped into the jetty at Roseau Bay, they saved the island’s rum culture. With three pot stills and a continuous still, Saint Lucia Distillers are able to make all kinds of rum, but the focus always remains quality over quantity.
