Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature Champagne NV
Wine critic Antonio Galloni tastes a lot of Champagne. So it’s well worth taking note when he tastes Laherte Frères’ wines, says the “Blanc de Blancs is one of the most memorable wines I tasted this year”, and notes that “Aurélien Laherte is one of the hottest growers in Champagne today.”
Crafted using 100% Chardonnay from biodynamic plots in Chavot and Epernay, Laherte Frères Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature is vinified in oak and is left to age for at least six months. After the second fermentation in bottle it’s left to rest on the lees for around 20 months before being disgorged by hand. It receives no dosage, so will appeal to those who like it dry, racy and thirst quenching. Taut as a cat before it pounces, it explodes with slate, white flowers, lemon zest, Granny Smith apples, Conference pear, mango sorbet, white pepper, brioche and distant smoke. It’s like spectacular fireworks in the mouth, flavours and aromas popping off in an ever more dazzling display. Pair with lobster, goats’ cheese, smoked salmon, creamy risotto or a lavish weekend breakfast.
The estate was founded in 1889 by Jean-Baptise Laherte in the picturesque village of Chavot, with its dinky stone church amidst the rolling vineyards. Aurélien Laherte is the seventh generation to take the reins of the 11 hectares, and is proving a legend in the making.
