Rosé de Meunier Extra Brut Champagne NV
Wine critics Antonio Galloni tastes a lot of Champagne. So it’s well worth taking note when he tastes Laherte Frères’ wines and describes the Rosé de Meunier Extra Brut as “bursting at the seams with personality” and notes that “Aurélien Laherte is one of the hottest growers in Champagne today.”
Crafted using 100% Pinot Meunier from biodynamic plots of old vines in Vallée de la Marne and Chavot, Laherte Frères Rosé de Meunier Extra Brut is vinified and aged for six months in oak using 30% macerated wine, 60% white wine pressed quickly and 10% red wine for colour. After the second fermentation in the bottle, it’s left to rest on the lees for around 24 months before being disgorged by hand. It receives a low dosage, so will appeal to those who like it dry, racy and thirst quenching. It’s unusual to find a pure Pinot Meunier and this wine begs the question why? Cranberry, red cherry, redcurrant, white pepper, rose petals, orange zest, leafy herbs and a zippy, refreshing finish par excellence. Pair with poached salmon, tuna tartare, carpaccio of beetroot, sundried tomato pasta or a lavish weekend breakfast.
The estate was founded in 1889 by Jean-Baptise Laherte in the picturesque village of Chavot, with its dinky stone church amidst the rolling vineyards. Aurélien Laherte is the seventh generation to take the reins of the 11 hectares, and is proving a legend in the making.
