Les Deux Albion Côtes du Rhône Red 2019
Located in the heart of the Gigondas appellation, Château de Saint Cosme is an exceptional estate with an incredible reputation and worldwide appeal, as proven by it featuring in a Japanese manga series about wine called ‘Kami no Shizuku’, meaning ‘The Drops of God’. The property has been under the ownership of the Barruol family since 1490, with Louis Barruol now at the helm as the 14th generation winemaker. On top of all that, their Gallo-Roman fermentation vats are perfectly preserved, and they boast over 15 hectares of old vines, which are farmed broadly following biodynamic principles. Their traditional wines are built to age and are some of the finest to be found anywhere in the Rhône Valley, offering an almost unrivalled bang for the buck.
Les Deux Albion Red was the wine that featured in famous Japanese manga from 2001. Since then, it has developed something of a cult following. It’s a co-fermented blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre that has been matured in wooden and concrete tanks. Expect strawberry, gingerbread, violet, olive, plum, tar, thyme, lavender, blackberry, spice, campfire, bacon and game flavours, coupled with value for money that’s hard to beat. A great wine to have on hand when you have friends over.
