Grand Vin Pomerol 2007
94 points, “Unquestionably the Pomerol of the vintage.” – Robert Parker
2007 may not have been Bordeaux’s greatest vintage, but that didn’t stop an impressive showing from L’Eglise-Clinet, which outscored Lafleur, Pétrus Angélus, Ausone, Margaux, Latour, Mouton Rothschild and many others in Wine Advocate. If you’re looking for a great 2007, you’ve found the crème de la crème. Dense and packed with cherry liqueur, cassis, strawberry, truffle, coffee, chocolate and damson. This has entered its drinking window and is calling out for slow-cooked classic French meat dish, think oxtail, grouse or venison.
Denis Durantou’s cult Pomerol “has constantly entranced [wine critic Neal Martin’s] senses”, having quickly become one of the region’s most sought-after wines in any vintage, and a real rival to Pétrus and Lafleur. Only around 5 hectares in size, the wine is made in tiny quantities and proves a battle to come by. Located on the plateau where soils are more gravelly, L’Eglise-Clinet is a concentrated and complex style of Pomerol that needs decades of careful cellaring before it unfolds its full wingspan.
