La Réserve de Léoville Barton 2014
La Réserve de Léoville Barton is the second wine of the much-loved and always reliable Second Growth Saint-Julien Château Léoville Barton. As wine critic Neal Martin says: “year-in, year-out [Château Léoville Barton] produces delicious, well-crafted, high-quality Saint-Julien that its legions of devoted fans – including myself – finish down to the very last drop.” And this is no exception.
2014 was a vintage slightly dismissed initially by the critics at En Primeur, but once the wines were bottled scores were re-evaluated and pumped up left, right and centre, sparking a flurry of eager fans to stock up. So don’t miss out on this one.
Quite an unusual 2014 as the fruit is quite jammy, something that few managed to achieve in this cool vintage. Layered beneath that soft red and black fruit is sweet vanilla, desiccated coconut, gentle spices and just a hint of balsamic. This “solid young wine” was awarded 92 points by American critic James Suckling and it’s a wonderful glimpse behind the scenes of this iconic château. A perfect steak-frites wine, or partner to pink lamb.
