Just classic Saint-Julien. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a superb line of acidity. Much more cohesive with more substance than prior vintages. One of only ten Quatrièmes Crus Classés, the very reasonably priced Château Talbot has an enormous following. Bought to drink by connoisseurs – rather than as an investment – availability of high quality back-vintages such as this are few and far between. It was named after Sir John Talbot, the Earl of Shrewsbury, who was killed in battle by the French just outside Bordeaux which ended many hundreds of years of English rule. Made under the watchful eye of Stephane Derenoncourt this wine overdelivers with a winning combination of crème de cassis, blackberry, raspberry, cigar box, smoke, leather, black cherry, graphite and floral, almost Margaux-esque, notes. Classic Claret to be served with Sunday roasts, comfort food and slow-cooked stews.
