Grand Vin 2013
98 points, “The purity of fruit is so impressive here…” – James Suckling
96 points, “This is the best vintage yet…” – Tim Atkin
96 points, “I’ve never tasted such an elegant Cheval des Andes.” – Wine Advocate
There's been nothing but universal praise for this majestic Malbec blend hailing from Château Cheval Blanc’s outpost in Argentina, located in the prestigious Lujan de Cujo region high up in the Andes. It’s the perfect synergy between Bordeaux blending and Argentinian innovation.
Pierre Lurton describes the 80-year-old Las Compuertas Vineyard as “the Grand Cru of the Andes”, and he knows what he is talking about because he heads up Château d’Yquem and Cheval Blanc. His team are a talented bunch; Pierre Oliver Clouet, the winemaker at Cheval Blanc, and Lorenzo Pasquini, formerly of Mondavi, Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia) and Château Palmer. In this slightly warmer vintage they really stepped things up a gear. The resulting blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot is silky smooth, with strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, brambles, dried herbs, black olives, tobacco leaves, violets and liquorice. Rather than being a blockbuster, it’s the kind of wine that gets into your soul, it’s almost haunting in its beauty.
Cheval des Andes was set up in 1999 as a collaboration between two Louis Vuitton Möet Hennessey brands: Cheval Blanc and Terrazas de Los Andes. It now has a dedicated team in the vineyard and they’ve dialled back the new oak to create a truly stunning and elegant wine.
