Vive Le Cornichon Extreme No.6 Gin
Citadelle seem to have really gotten themselves into a pickle this time…
Vive Le Cornichon is the sixth limited-edition gin to be released in Citadelle’s highly experimental ‘Extreme’ range. As the name suggests, it has been infused with the classic French pickle. They’ve sourced their mini gherkins from Maison Marc, a big favourite among foodies and Francophiles because they use no insecticides, herbicides or preservatives, and they pick each little, tangy, green delight by hand. Only 3,000 bottles were created, and it should make one heck of a Martini, especially for those who like it dirty.
Citadelle Gin is crafted at Château de Bonbonnet, home to Ferrand Cognac and Plantation Rum, using nineteen aromatics and botanicals, including French juniper, Moroccan coriander, Mexican orange peel and Chinese liquorice. Although a global fusion of ingredients, what they’ve captured is the essence of summertime in the southwest of France. Holidays, sunshine, ocean breezes, peace and quiet, a slower pace of life, and a gallic shrug to work – that can wait. As already explained, this adventurous spirit has a twentieth botanical in the mix: knobbly little gherkins. These seem to have accentuated the herbaceous notes of juniper and aniseed, while also adding in a ‘salt and vinegar’ dimension. Finally, on the finish, there’s a subtle touch of mustard and pearl onions that really puts us in the mood for a Gibson Dry Martini or a Red Snapper (a gin twist on a Bloody Mary).
What’s so exciting about the gins from Citadelle is the ambition. The grounds of the château are being rapidly planted with more and more juniper, allowing the team to impart an increasing sense of terroir into each bottle. And that has seen them pick up more than 60 medals since the launch of their original gin in 1996.
