Cloudy Bay is synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc, but few people realise that they also make a Gewürztraminer in tiny quantities.
Handpicked in Rapaura and Brancott, the Cloudy Bay Gewürztraminer is fermented in French oak barrels using wild yeasts and comes out reminiscent of top-flight Alsace. Off-dry and richly concentrated with lychee, mango, guava, peach, rosewater, Turkish delight, orange blossom, cream, dry spices and cream. It’s a revelation served alongside full-throttle Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian and Vietnamese dishes.
One of the first few wineries established in Marlborough, Cloudy Bay is a bona fide icon. This status was cemented in 2003 when it was bought by Louis Vuitton Möet Hennessey, a move that placed it alongside titans of the industry like Château d’Yquem, Dom Pérignon, Glenmorangie, Krug, Ardbeg and Château Cheval Blanc. Now Cloudy Bay is one of the world’s most famous producers, an incredible feat for a winery that was only established in 1985. It achieved this through meticulous attention to detail and unmistakable regional expression. Their Gewürztraminer is rarely seen, but quite simply a must-try.
