Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc 2019
95 points, “Pristine aromas of sliced limes, lemons, green melon and hints of lemongrass follow through to a full body with dense fruit, yet framed by a lightly phenolic texture that holds the whole thing together, tightening the fruit in the centre-palate. Beautiful finish. One of the best ever.” – James Suckling
Cloudy Bay rewrote the history of Sauvignon Blanc. Then they did it again when they released the Te Koko from their oldest vineyards in Rapaura, Brancott and Renwick. Fermented in barrels using indigenous yeasts and aged for an extended period on the lees, this is one of New Zealand’s richest and finest Sauvignon Blancs.
Wine lovers should think of it as Kiwi terroir meets Pessac-Léognan style. It positively pulsates with energy, not to mention beeswax candles, lemon peel, lemon meringue pie, gooseberry fool, freshly cut grass, hay drying in the summer sun, toasted hazelnuts, under-ripe mango and flint. Consider pairing with crab, sushi, gravadlax, yaki soba, buttery asparagus, Thai green curry, beetroot carpaccio or poached salmon.
One of the first few wineries established in Marlborough, Cloudy Bay is a bona fide icon. This status was cemented in 2003 when it was bought by Louis Vuitton Möet Hennessey, a move that placed it alongside titans of the industry like Château d’Yquem, Dom Pérignon, Glenmorangie, Krug, Ardbeg and Château Cheval Blanc. Now Cloudy Bay is one of the world’s most famous producers, an incredible feat for a winery that was only established in 1985. It achieved this through meticulous attention to detail and unmistakable regional expression. Te Koko is the jewel in the crown.
