The Story of the Spaniard Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
The latest release from Compass Box is inspired by a bespoke blend that they expertly crafted for The Spaniard bar in Greenwich Village, New York. The aforementioned establishment has admitted that this new version is even better than the original…
The sequel, called The Story of the Spaniard, is a masterclass in blending whiskies aged in Spanish casks. Three-quarters of the components have been matured in ex-Sherry or ex-Spanish red wine barrels; for the whisky geeks, they come from the Highland distilleries of Teaninich, Deanston and Clynelish, as well as from Speyside’s Glen Elgin, Dailuaine and Craigellachie. The latter is particularly intriguing as it's so rare, particularly in sherried form.
Rich, mouth-filling and heavily sherried, this rumbles like distant thunder in the mouth. There’s cherries, blackberries, stewed plums, leather, vanilla and a roasted meatiness evoking premium Rioja, mixed peel, raisins, Christmassy spices, almonds, lemon and salted caramel all reminiscent of Sherry, then layered on top is a very Scottish creamy, oaty, honeyed note of cranachan laced with raspberries. On sipping this Harvey Nichols was immediately and inexplicably torn between booking a one-way ticket to the Highlands or Andalucia, such is the pull of this dramatic whisky.
We highly recommend serving this late-night sipper in a wine glass to allow the incredible aromatics to develop and shine. Move over Don Quixote, the story of this particular Spaniard is even more compelling.
