Working with icons like Andy Warhol Jean-Michel Basquiat David Bowie RUN DMC Grace Jones Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood he often responded to political and societal issues in his vibrant work such as drug addiction apartheid racism homophobia capitalism safe sex the environment nuclear disarmament and AIDS awareness. Sadly he died in 1990 of AIDS-related complications. In 2019 he was one of the inaugural fifty American “pioneers trailblazers and heroes” inducted on the National LGBTQ Wall of Honour in the Stonewall National Monument in New York City’s Stonewall Inn.
