Limited Edition 30 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Only 527 bottles of this John Crabbie & Co Limited Edition 30 Year Old were made. Drawn from a single cask, in which it had been maturing for three decades, it was then finished in an ex-Sherry cask before release. The liquid was sourced from one of the very same distilleries that John Crabbie & Co purchased whisky from back in 1913. But what makes this whisky truly unique, is that it should never have been created. It was distilled in 1988 using the wrong kind of malt and was then forgotten about for 30 years. But we’re so glad it was rescued, because this rich mahogany Single Malt oozes the honey sweetness of baklava, Medjool dates, baked apples stuffed with raisins and sultanas, chocolate-coated candied ginger, buttery shortbread and the gentle waft of burning heather on the highlands. It’s unlike any other malt you will taste and will probably ever taste again.

John Crabbie & Co stopped making whisky in the 1970s. But their recent releases have been a bold statement of intent. This single cask is a follow up to their previous 30-year-old release, both of which were distilled at the same time by the same producer – rumoured to be one of the world’s most iconic and sought-after distilleries. If the buzz around who distilled it is true, then one of these bottles would be a very savvy investment.

John Crabbie is a whisky legend. He inherited his father’s merchant business in Edinburgh and turned it into John Crabbie & Co. Purchasing a porter brewery in Leith amidst the pirates and smugglers, just a stone’s throw from what is now The Whisky Society, he began utilising the imports from the docks to make gin, fruit-based cordials and of course the world famous Crabbie’s Ginger Wine. Crabbie then began procuring single malts from the finest distilleries, producing his own at the likes of Balmenach and Benrinnes, maturing barrels of Lagavulin, Talisker and Laphroaig, and then alongside Andrew Usher and William Sanderson he set up the iconic North British Distillery. Now reborn, his company has launched several limited edition single malts and has announced plans to launch its own creations from its multimillion-pound Bonnington Distillery in Leith.
