Domaine des Tourettes Hermitage Blanc 2016
96 points, “The 2016 Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes Blanc is a total blockbuster…. Killer notes of apple blossom, buttered citrus, and orange blossom all soar from the glass of this rich, powerful Hermitage Blanc that has a red wine-like structure, a huge mid-palate, and a great finish.” – Jeb Dunnock
Only around 5,000 bottles were made of this stylish Rhône white. This year Delas’ Hermitage Blanc is 100% Marsanne, fermented with wild yeast in barrel for almost a year. The Rhone is enjoying a run of great vintages, and this wine seems to have been supercharged with peach, nectarine, mango, pear skins, Victoria sponge, peanut butter, tarte aux abricots, jasmine and chamomile tea and dried herbs. Immense and creamy, this is a classic Hermitage Blanc in the making. It will continue to improve and evolve for decades, but if you get tempted to pull the cork, serve it alongside cassoulet, rich risotto, queso fundido, truffles or buttery fish dishes.
Established by Charles Audibert and Philippe Delas in 1835, Delas Frères remained a family business for over 140 years and is revered for the elegance of its wines. Already incredibly well respected, this Rhône powerhouse based in Tournon has now passed into the ownership of the Rouzauds – one of the wine world’s most powerful and discerning families who also look after Champagne Louis Roederer, Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Domaines Ott, Ramos Pinto and Champagne Deutz. So you are in very safe hand, especially considering that head winemaker Jacques Grange worked for Michel Chapoutier and Jean-Luc Colombo before joining Delas Frères. Under his watchful eye the quality has gone through the roof and the wines have gained an almost Burgundy-esque finesse.
