Section 94 is an oak-aged expression using fruit that is meticulously selected from the very best part of Dog Point’s vineyards. The resulting Sauvignon Blanc defies all the usual pigeonholes by differing in flavour, structure and weight from the majority of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc produced. Aromatic white flowers, ripe citrus fruit, minerals and smoky oak are suggested on a restrained and refined nose that has a strong savoury and complex quality to it. The palate is full bodied yet subtle with the citrus and herb complexity enhanced by intense mineral and lees flavours. A great wine to match with food, try with fish, poultry or vegetable dishes. As the experts at Wine Advocate put it, “It continues to be a benchmark for the so-called alternative style of Sauvignon Blanc.”
Marlborough’s Dog Point is owned by winemakers James Healy and Ivan Sutherland – both former Cloudy Bay employees – and their partners Wendy and Margaret. The two bonded while working at New Zealand’s most famous winery and decided to get a bit more ‘hands-on’ by branching out on their own. The team love Burgundy and are highly influenced by the great region, they’ve also moved their entire operation under the Biogro programme making all their farming organic. Dog Point takes its name from the name given to the area by the shepherds of the first European settlements, whose dogs wandered off or became lost in the tussocks and rolling hills. In a relatively short time, it has become one of New Zealand’s finest and most sought-after wine producers.
