Achillée Blanc 2016
Certified organic and biodynamic and made by a family who have farmed in this area of Alsace for more than 400 years, Achillée Blanc is a blend of Sylvaner, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Auxerrois, Muscat and Chasselas. Yep, that’s a lot of history, a lot of love and a lot of grape varieties.
This wine is beautifully aromatic, nosing it you’ll uncover wildflowers, blossom, apricots, greengages, peaches, lemons and limes, then more of the same on the bone-dry palate. It makes for a beautiful aperitif, or can be enjoyed with all manner of fish dishes, spring vegetables, cheeses, quiche, tarte flambée and sauerkraut. However, because it’s so deeply complex, it’s a wonderful wine to just sip on its own.
Based in the village of Scherwiller, halfway between Strasbourg and Colmar, Domaine Achillée was not named so due to their weak ankles. Achillée is the name for yarrow, a very important plant used in biodynamic farming and one that grows abundantly on the Dietrich family’s vineyards. Their winery is rumoured to be the largest building made of straw in Europe, there you can enjoy a cheeseboard, live music, a game of pétanque and definitely a glass of wine or two.
