This history of this world-renowned Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey all started with the Reverend Elijah Craig, a Baptist preacher credited with being the first person to age his whiskey in charred barrels. But many years later when the company discontinued their 12 Year Old because it had proven so popular that they were running out of stock, it was met with despair and damnation from fans. Hell hath no fury like an American whiskey drinker robbed of their favourite. But redemption has arrived, because the “Father of Bourbon” has replaced it with the Small Batch – a blend of 200 barrels aged between eight and twelve years. Our prayers to the heavens have been answered. Or maybe it was our haranguing of the Heaven Hill distillery where Elijah Craig is made, who knows? Either way, this is truly wonderful stuff, rich with red apples baked with cinnamon, nutmeg, marzipan and Demerara sugar. As you sip it, it evolves, presenting honey nut cornflakes, smoke, cookie dough ice cream, cherry drops, mint, wildflowers and dry oak. Extremely sophisticated and a worthy replacement to the 12 Year Old.
