Prunecchio Bianco Toscano 2016
It may sound like a cross between a dried fruit and Geppetto’s creation, but this is actually one of the most exciting white wines we’ve discovered recently.
Prunecchio is the name of an old vineyard on the Fattoria di Sammontana estate that yields 6,000 bottles’ worth of Sauvignon Blanc, Trebbiano and Malvasia. The result is a deeply aromatic white, which flits from gooseberry to white peach, from acacia to spring posies, and on to tarte tatin. A wonderful any-time-of-the-day wine that can enjoyed as an aperitif, or sipped alongside simple fish dishes, pasta primavera or steamed greens.
Fattoria di Sammontana, originally a property of the Medici family not far from Florence, was bought by a Polish nobleman by the name of Michele Dzieduszucki who liked to holiday in Tuscany. Now the fourth generation of that lineage runs the farm as an organic and biodynamic vineyard and olive grove. Peas and beans are sown between the rows of vines and everything is done following the rhythms of the moon in this bucolic paradise. The wine is made with naturally occurring yeasts that are bottled unfiltered and unfined.
