This wine comes highly recommended. The Sommelier Wine Awards awarded it a gold medal in 2019 and Jancis Robinson has described its winemaker as “one of the most skilled practitioners of Riesling anywhere in the world”. It’s no secret that we love Framingham – they make our wonderful Marlborough Pinot Noir – but we’ve fallen head over heels for this sweet Riesling.

Grapes shrivelled and raising by botrytis – also known as noble rot – were handpicked in eight passes through the old organically-farmed vineyard. 60% was fermented in stainless steel and 40% in oak barrels the result is a German Beerenauslese-esque wine oozing marmalade baked apricot stuffed with marzipan orange zest dried pineapple and mango cream and a finish of tangy apple and tangerine. It’s a lighter airier style of sweet wine that would pair beautifully with blackcurrant crumble lemon cheesecake crème brûlée tropical fruit salad sticky marmalade pudding or treacle tart.

The Framingham label was launched in 1994 which makes them sound like relative newcomers. But they actually have some of the oldest vines in Marlborough New Zealand planted in 1981. Named after their ancestral home just outside Norwich in England Framingham make the wine they want to drink. And that passion is obvious in every aromatic food-friendly small-batch drop they create.
