95 points “The Gaja 2018 Langhe Gaia & Rey is a beautifully pure Piemontese expression of Chardonnay. It opens to a light gold/straw colour with brilliant luminosity. This vintage is delicate but determined powerful but fragile all at the same time. The bouquet is shy to start off and requires (at this young stage when I tasted the wine) ample time to aerate. Once it unwinds the wine offers fresh citrus orchard fruit toasted almond and spice. Only partial malolactic fermentation is completed so the wine's energy and inner nerve is very much intact. Named after Angelo Gaja’s daughter and grandmother Gaia & Rey was the estate’s first white wine. It was also one of the very first Italian whites to be aged in barriques and it proved that the traditionally red wine-producing Langhe Hills could create phenomenal whites as well. In fact this is now considered one of Europe’s finest white wines. And this cheeky half bottle provides the perfect way to experience it.
Floral notes of wisteria and acacia mingle with green apple white peach lemon sorbet flint honey almond biscotti pencil lead and spices. Pure bliss. Consider pairing this iconic wine with lobster risotto rich pâté or creamy fish and pasta dishes.
Although this family estate was established in the 1850s it wasn’t until Angelo Gaja took over in 1970 that Gaja was pushed through into the vanguard of Italian wine. Although the Super Tuscans hog much of spotlight this man is often described as having single-handedly dragged Italian wine into the modern age. Not content with introducing revolutionary modern techniques and non-indigenous grape varieties to his Piedmont vineyards propelling them into the position of benchmark for the region he has also branched out to Tuscany with dramatic effect. A rebel a perfectionist and an incredible winemaker when it comes to the great man we think Robert Parker puts it best: “A genius for sure Angelo Gaja cannot be faulted for what he puts in the bottle.”
