Allta Private Edition No.10 Single Malt Scotch Whisky

“Their own yeast, their own barley. This is not just a great whisky it is also a really important one.” – Dave Broom, Scotch Whisky Magazine

Marking a decade of Glenmorangie’s Private Editions, the tenth limited edition in the series is called Allta – the Scots Gaelic word for “wild”. It has been created using their own Cadboll barley and a unique wild strain of yeast that dwells upon it. While artisan wine, beer and bread producers often experiment with different yeasts, its impact on the flavour of whisky is often overlooked. So Glenmorangie’s use of their own barley and their own yeast gives this Single Malt a real sense of terroir; something that few of the whisky world’s really big players have done before, except for maybe Bruichladdich.

Aged in ex-Bourbon barrels, Allta is so silky smooth and perfectly balanced that it makes you do a double-take on that considerable strength of 51.2%. Glenmorangie’s classic fruitiness manifests in apricot, mandarin, lemon peel, sultanas and a handful of ripe summer berries. But there is a herbal and cereal note that is quite different to previous releases; think rosemary oatcakes, granola, the rye and dill pickle combo of a Reuben, barley sugars, and the proving dough, toastiness and dried herbs of a pizzeria. Then the finish is all creamy marzipan and boiled sweets: barley sugars, Werther’s Originals, mint imperials and Fox’s Glacier Mints.

Glenmorangie is a distillery that needs little or no introduction, seeing as how it’s now a household – if sometimes mispronounced – name. Established in 1843 – although alcohol production may have started as early as 1703 – the folk of Tain have passed their skills down from generation to generation. But amidst all that tradition, they’ve never stopped innovating and only Prohibition and World War II have briefly stopped their remarkably tall whisky stills from running.
