Whilst legend states that it was Marco Polo who first brought Camellias to Europe, in truth it was the Portuguese who introduced this beautiful and enigmatic flower to Galicia from the East. Today more than 8,000 varieties of Camellia can be found in this area of northwest Spain and in tribute to the ‘most beautiful flower under the heavens’ it adorns our Harvey Nichols Treixadura.
Treixadura is the dominant grape variety of the region, and is championed by E. Ricardo Carreiro and his young winemaker, Xosé Lois Sebio, at Coto de Gomariz. Here, they practice organic viticulture using only natural products and herb compounds for their 32 hectares of vines which are nestled on the slopes overlooking the Avia River.
Their “bio” philosophy also extends into the winery. This elegant unoaked white displays aromas of white flowers and citrus fruit together with subtle hints of peach and freshly cut grass. Textured and round on the palate, this refreshing and aromatic white is ideal as an aperitif, and provides the perfect partner for a wide variety of fish based dishes - in particular the local seafood escabeche.
