Fine art meets the art of wine in this Tuscan masterpiece from Sandro Chia’s lovingly restored vineyards at the imposing Castello Romitorio. Seemingly painted with a palette of red fruits herbs and citrus it’s perfection with pizza and pasta dishes or sipped by itself when practicing the fine art of putting one’s feet up.

Part of our limited-edition Premium Range the Harvey Nichols Rosso di Montalcino was crafted by the highly respected Castello Romitorio using hand-harvested Sangiovese before being matured in oak for ten months. It has already been described by the expert critics at Antonio Galloni’s Vinous Media as an “incredibly pretty” red that “promises a number of years of further development in bottle.” Rosso di Montalcino is Brunello’s younger brighter and more vivacious sibling so this is brimming with energy perfumed violet and rose aromas dazzling strawberry and cherry fruit flavours and notes of wild thyme exotic spices orange peel leather and the polished wood of antique furniture. It manages to be at once clean and crisp but also as wild and rustic as the land from whence it came. A flamboyant work of art that’s as suited to fine dining as it is to comfort food and a quiet night in. But be quick because we only created a limited run of around 1 800 bottles.

The commanding Castello Romitorio sits high on the hill in front of Montalcino. During its long history which dates right back to Roman times it has been a temple a prison a fortress a monastery a castle a ruin a manor house a shelter for shepherds and most recently an art studio and winery. Once owned by a patron of the arts called Giorgio Franchetti it was swapped with the artist Sandro Chia for some of his paintings. A leader of the Neo-Expressionist movement in Italy and a contemporary of Jean-Michel Basquiat Chia used the castle as a studio. Also inspired by the winemaking revolution occurring in Brunello di Montalcino during the late 1980s he was at the forefront of the region’s rebirth. Now an internationally recognised winery Sandro and his son Filippo create elegant classic and sought-after Sangiovese of the highest calibre including our very own Rosso di Montalcino.
