Brunello di Montalcino Collection - Case of Six
“Potentially one of Italy’s greatest wines.” – Jancis Robinson MW
This case contains three Brunello di Montalcino from 2015, a year described by Vinous Media as “the vintage we’ve been waiting for” and by American critic James Suckling as a “fairy-tale vintage” and “a historical year for Brunello di Montalcino that nobody should miss”. Accompanying them, we’ve included three Rosso di Montalcino made by the same producers in 2018, so that you have something delicious to drink while the Brunello di Montalcino mature in your cellar.
Tuscany is famed for its three key Sangiovese-based DOCG wines: Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino. In our opinion, the latter is the greatest expression of pure Sangiovese to be found anywhere on the planet. Located 30 miles south of Siena, this region bottled its first Brunello di Montalcino in 1888 and they have become famous for being “capable of ageing for ever and a day”, according to Jancis Robinson. The thick-skinned grapes create wines with remarkable longevity that take on a wonderful leathery and velvety feel given time in oak. That’s why Brunello di Montalcino cannot be released until five years after the harvest. This exciting region is always in a state of flux, rocked by scandals, arguments over what is traditional and constant requests to change the laws, but that’s what keeps it fun.
The bottles of Brunello di Montalcino will continue to improve for a decade or more. But luckily the region does create a younger wine called Rosso di Montalcino, which is declassified Brunello di Montalcino that can be released 18 months after the harvest and is meant for earlier consumption. So, sip on these and forget about their older siblings for a few years.
The case includes wines from the biodynamic producer Sesti (Giuseppe Sesti is an astronomer, opera organiser and “without doubt one of the leading producers in Brunello di Montalcino”, according to Greg Sherwood MW), the tiny Pietroso (one of the smallest Brunello producers and a true ‘garagiste’ that offers incredible value for money), and Romitorio (a castle owned by an artist-turned-winemaker who received scores of 95 points for his 2015 Brunello di Montalcino from Wine Advocate, James Suckling and Vinous). It’s a stunning line-up and a wonderful introduction to the finest Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino.
