Graves Collection - Case of Three

Many consider Graves the region responsible for Bordeaux’s global fame. Thought to have been first planted by the Romans 2,000 years ago, the wines from this gravelly area have always proven popular in the UK, from Samuel Pepys in the 17th Century to Decanter Magazine in modern times, the latter describing Graves as being “home to some of the world’s favourite châteaux”. The greatest wines of Graves can be found in the sub-region Pessac-Léognan, which is where the first two wines in this case come from…

Named after a Scot, Château Smith Haut Lafitte takes a pioneering stance on organic winegrowing, which resulted in them being asked present at the United Nations Climate Change Conference held in Paris in 2015, the year before they made the highly polished Les Hauts de Smith 2016 – the estate’s Merlot-based second wine described by Neal Martin as “a winner.” His colleague, Antonio Galloni, agreed, calling it “a delightful introduction to Smith Haut Lafitte” and “certainly the best vintage of this wine that we’ve tasted since the 2010.” Joining that, we have a wine made by a top château in 2015 – a fabulous vintage in Bordeaux that the respected critic and Master of Wine Jeannie Cho Lee went as far as to “compare it to 2005 and 2009 in quality”, Decanter Magazine noted that “several châteaux have arguably made the best ever wines”, and Steven Spurrier announced simply that “Bordeaux is back”. It’s a cherry, cassis, blackberry, pencil shavings and cedar-laced affair from the much-loved Domaine de Chevalier. And joining those two bottles from Pessac-Léognan, we have one to watch – Château Villa Bel-Air 2016. This property is owned and run by the Cazes family of Lynch Bages fame. With provenance like that, this juicy, soft and approachable red was always going to be rather good. Cheers, to glorious Graves.
