Powerful and seductive like all the best Spanish reds this spectacular Rioja Reserva from the prestigious Bodegas Ramón Bilbao will sweep you off your feet. Aged in American oak for 20 months then matured in the bottle for a further 20 months it’s número uno with big meat dishes and strong cheeses.
Part of our limited-edition Premium Range this Rioja Reserva is a wine for those who love the region’s tradition. 2015 was a hot and dry vintage producing wines of powerful concentration and immense richness with “higher cooler vineyards of Rioja showing especially high quality” according to Jancis Robinson. This is important because the grapes – a blend of 90% Tempranillo and the remainder a mix of Mazuelo and Graciano – for this wine were all picked from 40-year-old bush vines in Rioja Alta. This subregion is located in the mountainous far west of the region where things are a little cooler and those bush vines provide shade and have old roots that dig down deep for water. As a result this wine excelled in this warm vintage.
Tim Atkin MW notes that “Ramón Bilbao have been dialling back the oak on their Reserva in recent vintages to good effect as it allows the fruit more freedom of expression.” So expect a deeply complex and silky-smooth red brimming with coconut sweetness floral notes spiced plum crumble (you can almost taste the caramelised brown sugar in the topping) raspberry redcurrants blackcurrants wild herbs and woody cumin. That wonderful leathery edge of age is creeping in but it remains surprisingly fresh suggesting that this will continue to evolve beautifully over the remainder of the decade. We recommend a little gentle aeration or decanting for this one. Consider popping a few in the cellar for family gatherings and Sunday roasts but be quick because we only created a limited run of around 3 000 bottles and when it’s gone it’s gone.
