For 50th birthdays or golden wedding anniversaries look no further than Henriques & Henriques’ phenomenal 50 Year Old Tinta Negra Madeira. This limited edition offers incredible value for money especially when you consider how much a whisky of the same age would set you back or how undrinkable most wines would be after half a century.

Despite being Madeira’s most commonly planted grape seeing Tinta Negra Mole on a label is incredibly rare. But this chameleon varietal is undergoing a renaissance helped in no small part by older bottlings like this. Sweet and rich with black fruit treacle dark chocolate mocha crème brûlée dried herbs Cuban cigars vanilla pods Hongqing green tea and gently curry-spiced fruit chutney but it maintains its freshness and youthfulness with a lick of moreish citrusy acidity. Calling this intense and complex just doesn’t do it justice it has to be tasted to be believed. Serve alongside caramelised desserts chocolate Christmas fare pâté or a cheeseboard.

Founded in 1850 by João Gonçalves Henriques his two sons took over in 1912 and this world famous Madeira house became Henriques & Henriques as we know it today. Madeira has enjoyed a strong bond with the United Kingdom since King Charles II married Princess Catherine of Portugal but Henriques & Henriques’ is particularly enviable. You’ll find them near the picturesque fishing village of Câmara de Lobos famously painted by Winston Churchill. They’ve also seen their wine served at a Buckingham Palace for a banquet attended by The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh not to mention William and Kate Charles and Camilla Prince Harry and the Prime Minister. They’re the only Madeira house to own vineyards one of the few whose wines are vegan-friendly and in 2017 were named “Best Fortified Wine Producer of the Year” by Revista de Vinhos Magazine – a considerable feat considering they were up against not only Madeira’s famous wineries Blandy’s and Barbeito but also all the great producers of Port.

Madeira is one of the most fascinating and underestimated wines on the planet. A visit to this tiny Portuguese island – closer to Morocco than Europe – reveals a dizzying array of styles a quite frankly crazy history and feats of engineering that make the mind boggle.
