Blue Label Ghost & Rare Port Ellen Blended Scotch Whisky
94 points, “This uninhibited, tempestuous expression of Blue Label highlights the artistry of the blender through the judicious use of closed distillery malts and grains.” – Whisky Advocate
A particularly friendly ghost, Johnnie Walker’s limited edition Blue Label Ghost & Rare series is a showcase for their precious casks from closed or ‘ghost’ distilleries. Bottled in blue glass, the second release is a celebration of Port Ellen, one of Islay’s lost distilleries. Closed in 1983, it has become the stuff of legends due to its heavy peat and immense complexity. As a result, the remaining dwindling stock has become some of the most collectable and sought-after whisky on Earth. Diageo have announced that they will resurrect Port Ellen, but as the stills and many of the buildings were destroyed, it will be a long time before we see the first new liquid. This will only make anything that contains the rare original spirit all the more collectable.
Building around a heart of Port Ellen that’s more than 30 years old, Johnnie Walker’s Master Blender Jim Beverage has added rare single malts from Mortlach, Blair Athol, Cragganmore, Dailuaine and Oban, as well as grain components from the closed Caledonian and Carsebridge distilleries – the latter closing the same year as Port Ellen.
This pared-back blend in numbered bottles gives a new insight into Johnnie Walker, one that’s packed with complexity despite its limited ingredients. It’s packed with coastal character, waxy lemons, pastéis de nata, cookie dough ice cream, charred grapefruit, tobacco, Mr Kipling French Fancies, Terry’s Chocolate Orange, musky spices, apples caramelised in butter and wonderful peat smoke. We loved the first release in this range from Brora, but this is even more fragrant.
