A particularly friendly ghost that’s hauntingly beautiful.

Johnnie Walker’s limited edition Blue Label Ghost & Rare series is an experimental showcase for the precious and irreplaceable casks from their closed or ‘ghost’ distilleries. Bottled in blue glass the fifth release (but the first with Emma Walker at the helm) is a celebration of Port Dundas one of Glasgow’s lost distilleries. Those who have tasted our exclusive 17 Year Old Port Dundas will know how incredible this grain distillery was.

Once upon a time Glasgow’s Port Dundas was the largest distillery in Scotland. Established in 1811 it provided grain components for Johnnie Walker J&B Bell’s Haig and many more. It grew and grew absorbing neighbouring distilleries. However Diageo decided to concentrate grain whisky production at Cameronbridge and North British Distillery so Port Dundas was closed in 2010. The landmark was demolished in 2011. So catching a glimpse of anything from this Glasgow distillery is incredibly rare and getting rarer by the day.

Building around a heart of Port Dundas that’s got to be more than 12 years old Johnnie Walker’s Master Blender Emma Walker has added two other ‘ghost’ components from Cambus and Brora as well as rare whiskies from Auchroisk Cameronbridge Clynelish Dailuaine and Glenkinchie.

With Port Dundas – one of the world’s greatest grain distilleries – at its core and those components from Brora and Clynelish we knew that this was going to be complex. Expect lashings of cream apple crumble cinnamon-spiced porridge apricot jam vanilla granola gingerbread poached pear tinned peach and an elegant wisp of smoke. Despite having only eight components this is unfathomably complicated on the palate. Light a roaring fire and settle back into the armchair with this numbered bottle. We can’t think of a better way to hibernate through the winter.
