Loch Gorm Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 2018 Edition
This whisky was ranked a deserved #15 in Whisky Advocate's Top 20 Whiskies of 2018.
The famously peaty Loch Gorm is Islay’s largest lake, and it was once home to a castle held by the Clan Macdonald. It also forms the scenic view from Kilchoman Distillery. The single malt whisky made in its honour was first launched in 2012, and there’s been a new limited edition release every year since with each one more highly sought-after than the last. The stunning Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2018 Edition contains some of the distillery’s oldest Sherry casks…
Between 2007 and 2011, nineteen Oloroso Sherry butts were filled with Kilchoman’s finest. These were bottled in spring 2018, yielding just 15,000 bottles. Non-chill-filtered with no added colour, this wee dram offers earthy cigar smoke, rum and raisin ice cream, spiced Christmas cake with a thick layer of marzipan, barbeque sauce, Seville orange marmalade, tinned fruit salad in syrup, smoked almonds, dried apricots soaked in sherry and that unmistakably medicinal Islay tang. Lingering long after you’ve swallowed, the rich and rounded Loch Gorm 2018 Edition is their best yet and one to savour until the next highly anticipated release. Fingers crossed that will continue this current trajectory.
Established in 2005, Kilchoman (pronounced Kil-ho-man) is one of Scotland’s smallest distilleries and was the first to open on Islay for over 120 years. They handcraft artisan single malt whisky – from barley to bottle – on a largely self-sufficient farm. Water comes from the Allt Gleann Osamail burn, Concerto barley is grown and harvested on site, they are one of only a handful of distilleries still practising floor malting, peat is cut from the local bog, and leftover draff from the mash tun is fed to their herd.
