“The first vintage of Village Chardonnay I tasted was from the 2002 vintage and it has been my ‘house Chardonnay’ ever since.” - Bob Campbell MW

Sometimes called ‘Mr New Zealand Wine’ Bob Campbell was only the second wine writer in the world (after Jancis Robinson) to become a Master of Wine. So any wine he drinks at home is a ringing endorsement. Speaking of Jancis Robinson she was so impressed by the value for money of the previous vintage of this wine that she said “This is a silly price for a brush with Kumeu magic.” And that’s why our fridge always has a bottle of Kumeu Village Chardonnay in it.

Although fermented in 60% stainless steel and 40% old French oak barriques there is very little oak influence here. Kumeu Village is all about vibrancy and it pulses with lime lemon grapefruit flint fig and white peach. A delightful aperitif but this versatile Chardonnay will pair with fresh pasta fish shellfish lemony roast chicken risotto and much more besides. But be warned this has already sold out at the winery so don’t delay if you want to stock up.

Widely regarded as the best Chardonnay producer in New Zealand and consecutively named in the Top 100 Wines of the World by the Wine Spectator Kumeu River was established in 1944 by Dalmatian-born Maté Brajkovich. The winery rose to its full potential first in 1982 when Matés son and New Zealand’s first Master of Wine Michael took over the reins. Michael vastly improved the quality of the fruit through improved drainage systems planting grass between the vine rows and changing the trellis system in the vineyards.
