Up! Shiraz 2014
Dark red wine from Denmark; is this Scandi noir?
OK, so this Shiraz isn’t Danish, it comes from a township called Denmark in the deep south of Western Australia. Known as Great Southern, this up-and-coming region – aided by climate change and the cooling influence of Antarctica – is producing some of Oz’s most exciting wines. As proven by the single vineyard Up! Shiraz, which is dark as night; blackcurrant, black cherry, blackberry, black plum, black olive, black pepper and a black marble appearance. But there’s also lovely notes of rose and violet.
La Violetta takes its name from an old Piedmontese song celebrating the joys of a little intoxication. So that gives you a feel for what winemaker Andrew “AJ” Hoadley is going for. This is drinkable fun; pure and simple. Hoadley bumped into a French winemaker travelling to see the Great Wall of China and the rest is history. He’s worked in Beaujolais, Montrachet, Piedmont, Abruzzo, Washington State and all over his homeland via stints at Aussie big boys De Bortoli and Hardy’s, so he knows his onions. This is a wine that will appeal to New World wine lovers as well as fans of Cornas and the Northern Rhône. Serve it up with barbacoa, chipotle-based tacos, empanadas, steak and chimichurri sauce, slow roasted aubergine, duck rillettes, rustic meat dishes and anything with burnt edges of oven baked cheese on it. For pure joy, maybe pour a glass of Up! and watch Pixar’s Up.
