Nierstein Bergkirche Riesling Kabinett 2016
The tiny wall-enclosed Niersteiner Glöck is Germany’s oldest vineyard; records showing that grapes have been grown there for over 1,270 years. Getting your hands on wine from that minuscule plot is nigh on impossible. However, this little beauty comes from Niersteiner Bergkirche just next door…
Louis Guntrum has a similarly impressive history. Established in 1648 they are now headed up by Louis Konstantin Guntrum – the eleventh generation of the family. 2016 was a year that started poorly with a rainy spring. But things turned around to create exceptional wines and a miracle harvest; as this Kabinett proves with its crunchy green apple, apricot, melon, pineapple, lemon and peach. Displaying a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity, plus the slightest spritz of energy and a faint waft of petrol, this is a fabulous Riesling to serve alongside spicy Asian cuisine. Think dosa with sambar, Thai curry, nasi goreng, gado gado, bánh xèo or summer rolls.
