Established in 1776, Louis Roederer is one of the few remaining independent, family owned Champagne houses. By 1876 the House had achieved such a reputation for quality that the second Louis Roederer was asked by Tsar Alexander II to create a new Champagne, Cristal, for the exclusive use of the Russian Tsars.
Cristal is made exclusively from the best grapes of Louis Roederer’s own ‘Premier Cru’ vineyards which are all organically farmed. Made from a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, a proportion of the wine was vinified in oak, giving the wine a full, round body and texture that is characteristic for the House style. Cristal Champagne is aged, on average, for six years in the cellars of Roederer and left for another eight months to rest after disgorging in order to attain the perfect balance. Cristal 2009 is an absolute classic. The wine showcases precise white fruit and citrus aromas, with a pure powerful mineral quality. The silky texture, complemented by the long and persistent finish makes it a remarkably balanced and refined Champagne that could be cellared for over twenty years. This impressive cuvée is perfect to be enjoyed on its own or can accompany lobster, salmon or even truffle-based dishes.
