A Night on Earth in Scotland Single Malt Scotch Whisky 2022
Shortbread, cinnamon and orange. With a flavour profile like that, this is the spirit of the season.
The Macallan’s ‘A Night On Earth in Scotland’ is a limited-edition series that will revel in Scottish Hogmanay traditions and the joy of celebrating the change of year. Created in collaboration with the Japanese-French illustrator, Erica Dorn (whose artwork has featured in Wes Anderson’s films), the gift box is bright, beautiful and multi-layered, much like the liquid within. In creating the Scotch itself, the Macallan team were guided by their memories of ‘first footing’. For those not familiar with this custom, to ensure good luck for a house, a dark-haired visitor (possibly a connection to a time when the arrival of a blond stranger would signal worries of a Viking invasion) should cross the threshold after the stroke of midnight. Known as the ‘first footer’, they would carry a symbolic piece of coal, shortbread, salt, black bun, coins or a wee dram of whisky.
A Night on Earth in Scotland delivers the shortbread character, the citrus and spice of black bun, and of course the Scotch, making it an almost perfect first footer. You’ll also discover notes of buttery stollen, baked apple, plum crumble, figs, butterscotch and toasted marshmallows. Limited editions like this always prove popular with collectors, as it will with anybody looking for a whisky for their New Year celebrations. So, don’t hang around, in case they’re all snapped up by dark-haired visitors.
“Macallan is the daddy, as far as legendary whiskies go.” So says whisky expert Ian Buxton. This Speyside behemoth enjoys huge global demand, perfectly illustrated by the incredible investment in its new distillery and a 30-year-old cask breaking auction records when it sold for $375,000 (US) in Hong Kong. Deservedly so, it remains the aficionado’s choice when it comes to Scotch.
