Kalterersee Keil Schiava 2015
Move over Pinot Noir, this is your new summer red. But that doesn’t mean you can’t drink it in spring, autumn or winter. Believe us, you are going to want to sip this all year round.
Made by a 400-year-old certified organic and biodynamic wine estate, using grapes harvested from a vineyard overlooking the green water of Lake Kaltern. The variety used is a rare indigenous grape called Schiava, which produces lighter wines not dissimilar to Gamay in Beaujolais. The vineyard is one of the warmest in all of South Tyrol and it’s a monopole, meaning it’s completely controlled by Manincor and making this wine utterly unique.
Kaltersee Keil is aged for five months in large oak barrels, buried deep in cellars beneath the vineyard. Pulling the cork is like opening the shutters in a cool thick-walled farmhouse to reveal the hot summer day beyond. You’ll find the cherry and toasty frangipane combo of Bakewell Tart, plus wild strawberry with a little stalky bitterness, cream, a wisp of candy floss and oodles of elegance. Pair it with a charcuterie board, any dish for which tomato, garlic and olive oil are the basis, wild mushrooms on sourdough, fresh pasta, or maybe even pan-fried trout.
